The clinical supervisor is responsible for providing clinical supervision to each supervisee assigned, as it relates to substance use disorders, mental health disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Clinical supervision is a disciplined, tutorial process wherein principles are transformed into practical skills, within four overlapping areas of focus: administrative, evaluative, clinical, and supportive.

  • Administrative: planning, organizing, coordinating, and delegating task; selecting and assisting staff; and determining clinical and administrative privileges.
  • Evaluative: goal setting: formulating realistic, measurable objectives that make performance review possible; and feedback: providing clear, constructive, humane communication concerning the degree to which goals have been attained.
  • Clinical: developing counseling knowledge and skills, identifying learning issues and problems, determining counselor strengths and weaknesses, and transmitting knowledge for practical use
  • Supportive: coaching, moral building, burnout prevention, and encouragement of personal growth

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of a Clinical Supervisor

  • Provide weekly clinical supervision to assigned supervisees, for minimum of 1 hour per week (50 hours per calendar year).
  • Document the clinical supervision session, and retain thorough records.
  • Oversee diagnosing and assessment being conducted by supervisee.
  • Biannual evaluation of each supervisee in the areas of personal characteristics, philosophical foundations, communication, counseling skills, adjunctive activities, and ethical standards.
  • Monitor each supervisee 1:1 during group facilitation, individual counseling, clinical case presentation, etc., once per quarter.
  • Review all treatment plans, assessments, and treatment recommendations made by supervisee, and providing supervising signature where required.
  • Document clinical consultations in the client’s file.
  • Ensure compliance with all licensing & accreditation requirements including organizational (Department of Health, Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services, CARF, etc.) and individual, for each supervisee (as outlined by the Division of Consumer Affairs) for each respective discipline, as it relates to clinical practice & clinical supervision.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable laws including those related to Duty to Warn, Child Abuse & Neglect, Elder Abuse, Megan’s Law, etc.
  • Collaborate with management on staff development and clinician strengths.
  • Complete all required (internal and external) supervision forms, applications, etc., retain proof within agency, and submit to Division of Consumer Affair where applicable.
  • Strict adherence to all organizational policies.
  • Comply with and satisfy all supervision and practice regulations as defined by Division of Consumer Affairs for each discipline: Social Work: N.J.A.C. 13:44G; Alcohol & Drug: N.J.A.C. 13:34C; Professional Counseling: N.J.A.C. 13:34(10-13)

Preferred Qualifications of a Clinical Supervisor

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in related discipline (i.e. clinical social work, mental health counseling, substance use counseling, etc.), required, and
  • Relevant supervision certificate: CCS (Certified Clinical Supervisor)

Licensing:

  • LCADC, and 1 Year of practice as LCADC, and
  • Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) certification from an ICRC member board.
  • Dual Credential (LCSW & LCADC or LPC & LCADC), preferred. Dually credentialed LCSW or LPC who holds a valid supervision credential for their discipline, has three years of clinical experience, and has held LCADC for one year minimum, may not be required to obtain CCS per Alcohol & Drug Counseling Regulations:
  • “A New Jersey licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor who is also a New Jersey certified advanced practice nurse, licensed psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed marriage and family therapist, or licensed professional counselor, is deemed a qualified supervisor by the other respective professional licensing board, and who has three years of clinical experience in alcohol and drug counseling.
  • If the other professional licensing board does not have specific statutory or regulatory requirements to qualify a licensee to supervise clinical mental health services, the Committee will, on a case-by-case basis, consider that dual-licensee’s supervisory experience to determine whether to waive the CCS requirement.”
